Dialysis

A dialysis diet is crucial for individuals with kidney failure on dialysis to manage fluid and waste buildup, control electrolyte levels, and reduce the strain on the kidneys during treatment.

Dialysis

Your 50%
Half of your plate should consist of non-starchy, low-potassium vegetables like bell peppers, cucumbers, cauliflower, and low-potassium fruits such as apples, grapes, and berries. These foods are essential for adding fiber and nutrients without overloading the kidneys with excess potassium. These recommendations can change based on your current lab results so it is important that you are monitored by a medical team to adjust your diet as needed.

Your 30%
This portion of your plate should include lean, high-quality protein sources, as dialysis patients often need more protein. Opt for skinless poultry, fish, or eggs, which are lower in phosphorus but still provide the protein necessary to replace losses from dialysis.

Your 20%
The remaining portion of your plate should focus on grains or starchy vegetables that are lower in potassium. Previous education indicated limiting whole grains due to the higher phosphorus content, but newer research suggests that whole grains should be included in the dialysis diet in moderation due to the beneficial fiber content. Suitable options include white or brown rice, refined or whole grain pasta, or white/wheat bread.
